Stand-Up Comics Weekly News, 6/30/09
Submitted by Eric on 2009-06-30The Short of It:
1. REBORN
2. The Chicago Comic-Con (formerly WizardWorld Chicago!)
3. (Comic) Book Club July 2009
4. New This Wednesday
Before we get into the e-mail, I'd like to share some good news with
all our loyal readers: our friend and business partner Brian got
married this past Saturday! Many of you probably remember Brian as the
"third stand-up guy" or "the computer guy" and if you come in on
Wednesdays or weekends you may have been lucky enough to catch him
lately. Next time you see him, make sure you tell him congrats. Also,
he told me that for his wedding gift he'd like everyone to clear out
their files. Really.
On to the news!
1. As you have no doubt heard, Captain America is back. STEVE ROGERS
is back. Tomorrow. Let Stand-Up Comics be your source for all things
Reborn! Not only will we have PLENTY of Reborn #1 but we will have at
least one copy of several rare variant covers (which we sell on a
first come, first serve basis). And if you want to go back and check
out what Cap's been up to all these years, we can help you with
that--we've got the Essential Captain America vol. 1 in stock, which
reprints his earliest adventures, as well as the hardcover of the
Death of Captain America collection. Wednesday, July 1, Stand-Up
Comics is where you want to be!
For more information on this book, go to www.marvel.com/reborn
2. For the past few years Stand-Up Comics has had a dealer table at
WizardWorld Chicago, the premiere Midwest comic book convention which
hits every summer at the Donald E Stephens center in Rosemont. Sadly
this year we are not attending the show (now called the Chicago
Comic-Con) as dealers (only fans) but that doesn't mean Stand-Up
Comics can't be your Con Connection (Con-nection?). As of this year
Stand-Up Comics is an official ticket dealer for the show, so if
you're planning on going buy your tickets through us! There are three
ways to do it and each way is really simple:
- in person: Do it at the store! Just ask Pat or myself to give you
your tickets.
- online!: point your browser to
https://wizardworld.ticketleap.com/Chicago/t/standupcomics The site
has a user-friendly interface so getting your tickets couldn't be
easier!
- on the phone!: in case you don't quite trust that internet yet (how
are you reading this?!). Call 877-402-3748 to buy your tickets, and
make sure you mention Stand-Up comics when you do!
Any way you choose to pre-buy tickets, you're getting a discount over
buying them at the door--you save $5/day buying early and get TWO DAYS
FREE by buying the weekend pass, which is the only way you get to go
to premiere night on Thursday. And don't forget kids 10 and under get
in free!
So remember, if you're going to the Chicago Comic-Con this year, make
sure you go through us!
3. As tomorrow is July 1, we'll have our July 2009 (Comic) Book Club
book in stock and ready for your enjoyment! Since Brian (who's also
our webmaster) is on his honeymoon it may be awhile before we can
update the website with the new book but I'll post a link to it here
in case you're curious. We'll be reading Adam Warren's
eastern-inspired American manga Empowered vol. 1, with the discussion
to follow on July 26th. For more information on this book, check out
http://www.darkhorse.com/Books/14-043/Empowered-Vol-1

Stand-Up Comics Weekly News, 6/23/09
Submitted by Eric on 2009-06-23First off, I apologize for the lateness of this email; we've been
without internet all day and it got restored about 5 minutes ago.
Sorry folks! Anyway...
The Short of It:
1. ComicMix and You
2. New This Wednesday
1. By now, dear readers, I'd imagine you are familiar with local
creators Unshaven Comics and their relationship with your favorite
comic shop (us!). They've been signing, drawing, and selling their
books in our store for the last couple Free Comic Book Days and if
you're lucky you might catch a glimpse of them in here on a Wednesday
or Saturday… if you're lucky. Well, in addition to being a
stellar comic creator and hilarious stand-up comedian (did you come to
the comedy festival Saturday? No? Shame!) one of the Unshaven crew is
also a columnist on the website ComicMix, which is one of the cooler
places I've found on the web for comics news. If you get a chance,
mosey on over to www.comicmix.com and browse around, and make sure you
look for the articles by Marc Alan Fishman. This week he's got a
series of matchups between Michael Bay's Transformers and their 1980s
counterparts which I find very entertaining… check them out and
comment (Roger Ebert trashed the new Transformers film, by the way. It
was one of those scathing reviews that's so harsh it's funny).

Stand-Up Comics Weekly News, 6/9/09
Submitted by Eric on 2009-06-09Sorry this hasn't been posted to our website for a few weeks; the administrative aspect of our site was out of commission for awhile, but it's back now! If you ever find yourself missing a weekly update, you can get them on our MySpace (posted as blogs) at www.myspace.com/standupcomics, or you can sign up for our mailing list by emailing us!
The Short of It:
1. (Comic) Book Club June '09
2. Stand-Up Comics Comedy Fest 2009 -- Saturday, June 20 @ 6:30 PM
3. New This Wednesday
1. Since the June '09 (Comic) Book Club book will be securely on our
shelves tomorrow, I'll go ahead and put it in the email: this month
we'll be reading Gipi's Notes for a War Story, published by First
Second Books. We still don't have the exact date of the meeting nailed
down, but hey, at least we've got the book. For more information on
this title and on (Comic) Book Club in general, be sure to check out
www.stand-upcomics.com/bookclub.php. And hey, while you're at it...
why not pick up this month's book? It couldn't hurt to try something
new!
2. NEXT SATURDAY, JUNE 20 @ 6:30 PM: It's become something of an
annual tradition at Stand-Up Comics, and it's pretty wonderful--once a
year a fine gathering of comedic talent will converge on our tiny
comic shop and provide nigh infinite laughter for the viewing masses.
I'm talking of course about SUCCFest (that's Stand-Up Comics Comedy
Festival), now in its fourth year (though sadly it hasn't always gone
by that name).
We've got an impressive array of talent lined up this year. It will
take much the same form as last year's show, with a bit more stand-up
(but just as many laughs... OR MORE!!!). The night will start off with
a ton of solo comedians doing short stand-up acts for your pleasure.
It won't be a competition this year... it'll just be for fun.
Returning comedians from last year include Matthew Novak, Marc
Fishman, Dale Zawada, Dan Gonya, and Tony Rodriguez, and there will
also be a host of newcomers!
After that we'll be spotlighting last year's two headlining groups:
first up it's sketch comedy group The Talent, made up of alums of the
University of Illinois' Spicy Clamato improv troupe. After them and
headlining the show will be internet sensations (and all-around great
guys) Big Dog Eat Child! I have a feeling you've seen their videos,
and I have more than a feeling you won't want to miss their live show.
If you're not sure who these guys are, just go to YouTube and look up
"Toby Jones". You won't be dissapointed.
If you've got any questions about specifics for the night... or maybe
you've got the itch to perform a little stand-up yourself... make sure
to contact me! We hope to see you there!
Remember: Saturday, June 20 @ 6:30 PM. Be there!
