The Short of It:
1. New Saturday Hours
2. (Comic) Book Club September 2009
3. House of M(ouse)
4. New This Wednesday
1. Hey everybody -- due to several life changes for the Stand-Up guys
(Eric's rockin' band, Pat's going back to school) we've had to reduce
our Saturday hours a bit; starting this Saturday, September 5, our
official Saturday hours will be 12 - 6 PM. Thanks for understanding!
2. And another big thanks to those of you who attended last week's
meeting of the (Comic) Book Club, in which we discussed Grant Morrison
and Dave McKean's Arkham Asylum. This book probably had the widest
range of opinions of any we've tackled in the club yet, which led to a
great discussion! Be sure to join us this month for Wildstorm's
Planetary vol. 1 by Warren Ellis and John Cassaday (and please note:
this month the book discussion will be bumped up a week, to Sunday the
20th, due to too many scheduling conflicts on the 27th).
3. If you missed yesterday's big comic news... well, where the heck
were you? The Disney-Marvel buyout is being talked about pretty much
everywhere; Publisher's Weekly comics blog The Beat
(http://pwbeat.publishersweekly.com/blog/) writes that this is going
to be a big story "well... forever" and CNN
(http://money.cnn.com/2009/08/31/markets/thebuzz/index.htm?source=yahoo_quote)
has even pointed to it as a sign that the recession is ending! (you
hear that guys? it's okay to spend money on comic books again!).
I had a whole paragraph of editorial in here about the buyout but
then I realized no one would want to read it. My point was this: it's
business as usual at Stand-Up Comics. As far as we know right now
Marvel's books will keep rolling out as usual with zero content change
-- so don't worry, Disney won't change your comics! And if you find
Marvel's sudden corporate move really distasteful, you could always
check out some indie books instead -- maybe Oni Press' Scott Pilgrim,
anything from Jeffrey Brown (via Top Shelf Publishing), or the rich
catalog of books available from First-Second.
